The Art of Detailing
|Use Two Buckets to Wash
Add clean suds to one bucket and clean water to the other. Rinse out your cloth in the clean water before dipping it into the suds bucket. Doing this will keep your suds water clean. If you just use on, you are putting dirt into your clean soap bucket and then back onto your car.
|Invest in Microfiber!
Microfiber cloths are a necessity when it comes to cleaning your car. They aren’t harsh on your vehicle and they won’t scratch material or paint. Greater efficiency, lower friction, less scratches, easier washing, rinsing and drying. It’s a win win…Win win win win situation!
|Use Trim Protectant/Restorer Before Waxing.
Wash and dry your vehicle first, then buffer to apply the protectant. Use a clean towel to wipe away the product.
|Buy a Dual Action Polisher
A Dual Action Polisher doesn’t have a forced rotation, which keeps the tool moving even under lots of pressure. This tool is great for inexperienced hands.
|Use a Clay Bar System
After washing and drying your car, rub the clay bar on over the paint to remove “bonded environmental contaminants” without removing paint thickness.
|Use a Plastic Bag
Put your hand in an ordinary thin plastic grocery bag, and run it over the surface of the paint. The plastic bag will intensify any bumps and imperfections so that you can go back and detail again.
|Dry Glass in Two Directions
Dry horizontally first, then vertically. You get a perfectly clear window without having to go back and chase streaks.
|Brush it First
Use a stiff nylon brush and run it through your carpets. When you come to vacuum, all rocks will be free from the carpet. Same goes for door panels, though you’ll want to use a gentler brush. If more aggressive cleaning is necessary, start gently. Use a gentle solution of fabric cleaner, and dry with a soft cotton cloth.
|Use Electricity to Your Advantage
Buy some latex gloves. Rub the gloves over pet hair covered spots to lift the hair, making it easier to suck up with the vacuum!
|Don’t Touch the Headliner
Even a little bit of agitation can cause the glue in a headliner to fail. If you positively must clean your headliner, use very little moisture, and never allow it to soak through the outer fabric.
Car detailing can take hours and doing things improperly can lead to damaging your vehicle. Another option is to get it done by a professional auto spa.
