The 5 Best Outdoor Winter Activities
We’ve rounded up a list of the 5 Best Outdoor Winter Activities that promise to deliver on both fun and warmth!
Cross-Country Skiing is our first recommendation and just the right amount of fun meets exercise! AKA – it’s the perfect outdoor activity! Work up a sweat and have some fun making your way through some of the best skiing paths in Regina! Don’t have cross-country skis but are super interested? No worries, luckily both Fresh Air Experience and Sunshine & Ski have ski rental options for the day! Once you’ve got your skis and are all suited to go, all you have to do is choose where you want to ski! Douglas Park and the Science Centre are two great trail options if you’re looking to stay within Regina! For those who may want to get a bit more off of the grid, we love White Butte Trails and the Qu’Appelle Valley Nordic Club trails located near Lumsden, SK. Dress warm and bring some headphones to jam out while you enjoy your cross-country ski!
Our next recommendation is quite a catch! Spend the day ice fishing and enjoying company out on your favourite lake! There are a plethora of great options to go check out during your ice fishing adventure. However, we recommend Lake Diefenbaker, Tobin Lake, and Last Mountain Lake for the best catches!
What you’ll need to enjoy a day of fishing:
Ice fishing license! You can purchase a license for the day or yearly through the Government of Saskatchewan’s website!
Ice fishing tent or an ice fishing house if you know someone who is an avid ice fisher that you could borrow one from.
Tools: 6-8 inch hand auger to drill your hole, spud bar, a scoop, and a gaff hook, flashlight, and your basic fishing equipment.
Once you’re equipped, it’s time to pack up the vehicle and hit the open road!
Take A Hike
Lace-up your hiking boots and get ready for a day of adventure! Take the quick 30-minute drive out the north end of Regina and make your way to Wascana Trails! With over 15km’s of hiking trails to explore, you’re in for a real treat! Be sure to dress in layers and bring a small backpack for water and snacks! Take a break and have a mini picnic at one of the many vantage points along the way. Don’t forget to pack a speaker to set the perfect backtrack for a day of exploration. We recommend the “Mountain Vibes” playlist on Spotify. We may not be in the mountains, but hey, one can dream.
Do you love to ice skate? We have just the activity for you! Echo Valley Provincial Park is gearing up to deliver their “Skate the Park” again this year! Beginning late January, you can skate through the Aspen Campground and take in the beauty of nature! Open Tuesday evenings from 4 pm to 8 pm and Saturday afternoons from 12 pm to 4 pm, this is the perfect winter activity or date! Lace your skates and get ready!
Put on your ski pants, jackets, and mitts, it’s time to have an outdoor bonfire! Pick a winter evening that’s particularly mild so you and your crew will stay toasty all night long! Relish in time spent around the fire playing games and enjoying each other’s company. Warm yourself up with some tasty s’mores and apple cider to round out a pretty darn perfect night!
