Tips for Your Next Test Drive

May 15th, 2020 by

We’re well into spring, and summer is approaching. Are you ready for an upgrade?

Come check out Capital Ford Lincoln and take advantage of our endless inventory of new and used cars, trucks, and SUVs. Browse our inventory online or simply come down to one of our showrooms to take a look at our vehicles first hand. When you find one that you like, it’s time to take a test drive. We’re going to outline some of the best questions to ask and things to look for while you’re on your test drive, ensuring that you are getting the most out of your new car.

Seating & Cargo Space

When you step into the vehicle, get comfortable. Make that you can adjust and tailor the seat to your specific requirements. Ensure that you have enough lumbar support, that you’re close enough to the wheel, and the seat is comfortable for you. Also, check the movement in the steering wheel. Is it comfortable given your height?

In addition to your personal seating, think about the total number of seats in the vehicle. This will vary in importance depending on if you have a family or if you are often driving alone. Regardless, it’s always important to consider back seat space. Take a seat back there. Is there room for the passengers that you’ll have? Would everyone be comfortable?

Check the trunk. Is there enough room in the back for what you need? Are you often transporting larger items? Are the seats easily retractable?

Driving

It’s best to test the vehicle on a number of different roads. Test drive it in the city. Take a cruise through the city and see how the vehicle drives in normal road conditions. In addition, you’ll want to take it on the highway to get a feel for how it handles at increasing speeds. This will also help you get an idea of how quiet the cabin is during long highway drives. While driving make sure the environment is similar to the way it would be if you were driving on your own.

Some other thoughts to ask yourself are: Is the car fast enough? How is the overall performance of the vehicle?

Parking

Depending on the size and type of vehicle you’re driving, the parking experience will vary. Often larger vehicles can be more difficult to park if you’re not used to driving them. Thankfully, new Ford vehicles have Ford Co-Pilot 360 integrated into their system, making your life a lot easier. When parking check for any blind spots the vehicle may have. Assess the blind spots. Are they manageable for you?

Steering and Controls

Ensure the steering wheel isn’t stiff and is easy to maneuver. Check the brakes, ensuring that they’re comfortable for you and not overly sensitive. In addition, ensure the acceleration is smooth.

Technology

Check out the entertainment system. Is the interface easy to navigate and integrate your smartphone into? What is the performance of the audio system? Are you looking for a specific audio system or are you fine with a standard one?

Make the Call

Now it’s up to you to make the call. We’ve given you all the tips you need when you come down for a test drive. Don’t ever hesitate to ask the sales associate any questions regarding the vehicle and its performance. If you’re wondering about recommendations, the 2019 Ford Edge and the 2020 Mustang are two of my favourites in terms of design and performance. Happy driving!
