Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection in Ford Models

2018 Ford trucks are equipped with an underestimated feature: Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection. The F-150 isn’t the only vehicle in the Ford lineup to have this innovative technology, but it’s most definitely an important safety detail. We’re here to tell you all about this component and how it can help prevent an accident. Even if your eyes are on the road, it’s always nice to know you can rely on your vehicle to help you avoid a road hazard.

How it Works

Pedestrian Detection is a feature created by Ford and first debuted in Europe in 2015. It’s designed to alert you if there’s a potential collision ahead of you, whether it’s a pedestrian or a vehicle. It could reduce the severity of a crash or prevent one from happening altogether.

The system uses radar and camera technology to scan the road ahead of you. If there is a risk of a collision or a pedestrian crossing, it provides a warning to the driver. This will look like a line of blinking lights on the windshield visible to the driver. The warning light with chime and make a sound with an additional warning message on the display.

If you don’t react or apply the brakes, the vehicle will do it for you! It will “pre-charge” the brakes and if needed, apply full-braking force. This braking feature is what could stop you from hitting the vehicle in front of you or even that person crossing the street with their dog. While it is able to detect an accident about to happen, you still have to give the road your full attention. It does not replace the driver and there are some limitations including nighttime, low lighting conditions, and certain weather conditions. You’ll have to keep all your crashes and accidents in video games like Grand Theft Auto.

Leaders of Safety

The Ford Motor Company has always had an interest in safety and making their vehicles some of the safest ones on the road. Raj Nair, Ford Group Vice President said, “This technology adds to the already impressive list of driver assist technologies Ford customers benefit from today.” And it’s true. Ford also offers:

  1. Blind Spot Information System (BLIS)
  2. A lane-keeping system
  3. Cross traffic alert
  4. Adaptive cruise control
  5. and park assist

These unique features can be found on a number of different Ford vehicles.

The Technology

Ford engineers have created a special camera that is mounted near the windshield that also combines information collected from an additional sensor on the bumper. The vehicle’s intelligent system then checks the information against a database of pedestrian shapes to distinguish people from other roadside scenery and objects.

This technology was extensively tested on a closed track using mannequins to ensure it’s accurate results. They spent months refining and tweaking this tech on different roads around the world to test reliability.

Why Buy Ford?

The Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection is arguably one of the best safety features ever created for a vehicle. It’s always nice to feel like you have a second pair of eyes on the road to keep you safe. Driving is dangerous. It just is. My dad always told me that you can be the best driver out there, but you don’t know how well everyone else drives on the road. If there’s a feature that will keep you extra safe on the road, why not opt for it?
