The 2018 Ford Expedition FX4
With the absence of the Ford Bronco, Ford is lacking a true off-road machine. For blue oval fans, who don’t necessarily like to stick to the smooth asphalt, there are few compelling options aside from the prohibitively expensive Raptor (Starting MSRP of $68,399). But that might all be about to change. Not because of the Bronco’s slated return. But because of the introduction of the 2018 Ford Expedition FX4.
2018 Ford Expedition FX4
The first thing you will notice about the FX4 is its new styling (but that is not remotely the most important thing about it). The days of the boxy Ford SUV lineup are long gone. The Expedition is fit, smooth, and sleek. It looks just fine alongside the Lincoln Navigator with which it shares a platform. It’s still just as big, but it disguises it with a bit more charm.
The FX4 comes with a standard 3.5L EcoBoost engine capable of delivering 375 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. Consequently it’s equally capable of hauling a boat and carrying eight passengers in total comfort. But the Expedition FX4 has bigger ambitions than passenger toting.
“The FX4 Off-Road package delivers off-road driving confidence,” said Mike Kipley, Expedition vehicle engineering manager. “The technology we’re using works to adapt to different driving conditions so customers can enjoy the adventure without worry.”
What technology, Mike?
How about the electronic limited-slip rear differential? It can automatically vary the amount of power delivered to the wheels on one side of your expedition in order to limit slippage. That’s not just valuable for off-roading. It will also help with towing. Ford also specially tuned the FX4’s shocks for off-road performance. The stiff settings will ensure your wheels remain in contact with the road.
The Expedition FX4 also uses a combination of seven different skid plates. Obviously, those include plates to protect your SUVs external components. But Ford have even included a powerful sand-shield to keep the turbocharger and intercoolers free of debris. As you probably expect, the FX4 comes with rugged, all-terrain tires. Ford has wrapped them around exclusive 18-inch Magnetic Metallic-painted aluminum wheels.
The Expedition FX4 will also come with the new Terrain Management System. It allows drivers to select from seven different driving modes catering to different road conditions. There’s normal, sport, tow-haul, eco, and more.
Here are a few more things you’ll find inside the special Expedition:
- Special FX4 badging
- Chrome running boards
- Rubber floor liners (if things get wet)
Ultimately, if you’re looking for a full-sized SUV with brawn and a bit of a wild side, you should look no further than the 2018 Ford Expedition FX4.
