Introducing the 2018 Ford EcoSport
With the SUV gaining a greater share of new auto sales every year, automakers are constantly looking to broaden their utility lineup, and Ford is no exception. In a few years, Ford will bring back the rugged Bronco and introduce an all-electric Ford has also introduced the EcoSport (maddeningly pronounced like echo), a subcompact SUV available in dealerships now.
How Small Is It?
Subcompact SUVs (often called CUVs or MUVs) offer the convenience and agility of small cars, and the space and height of small SUVs. The actual size difference between the EcoSport and its older brother, the Escape, is not tremendous: the Escape is 15 cm taller, and 10 cm wider. Length is the greatest differentiator with the new subcompact measuring 30 cm shorter than the Escape. Importantly, the EcoSport is nearly 20 centimetres taller than the Fiesta with which it shares a platform.

While the Ford EcoSport may be small, the impression it creates is anything but. On every trim level, the subcompact crossover is stylish and fun. For example, the standard wheels are of the 16” Magnetic Low Gloss aluminum variety. It also comes in some striking colours like Blue Candy and Moondust Silver.
The 2018 Ford EcoSport offers a choice between two engines. First up is the 1.0L EcoBoost I-4 standard on the S, SE, and Titanium trim levels. It gets 123 horsepower and 125 lb.-ft of torque. Fuel economy is rated for 8.6L/100km in the city and 8.1L/100km on the highway. Considering the small size and weight of the EcoSport, the base powerplant is more than powerful enough for confident and immediate acceleration. But if you want more power, you can upgrade to the the 2.0L Ti-VCT direct-injection I-4.
With either engine, you get confident and sporty performance. That’s partly down to the fact that Ford has carefully tuned the suspension to deliver a bit more sportiness. And with available Intelligent 4WD (SES), you get enhanced grip. The system monitors each wheel in real time and when it senses a wheel slipping, it diverts torque to the others. It’s a smart and invaluable tool for dealing with Saskatchewan’s… uninviting roads.

Who Should Drive the 2018 Ford EcoSport?
That’s a tough question. The EcoSport is a well rounded vehicle, but will probably be best appreciated by younger drivers. The combination of entertainment tech, smart safety features, and exuberant style make it well suited for students and young professionals who want to express themselves.
