We routinely call the F-150 “the #1 vehicle in Canada” (which it is) because it vastly outsells everything else. But selling a lot of something doesn’t make it good – just look at Arby’s, Bud Lite, or [person from the Billboard Charts]. So, we might raise a pertinent question: is the F-150 the best truck? Yes, the F-150 is the best truck. But you certainly don’t have to take my word for it.
It’s been a big week for the 2018 F-150. This is the time of year when magazines and online publications assess the year’s products and rank them for consumers. And the F-150 has been sweeping the floor. If the critics are to be believed, the 2018 F-150 is easily the best truck of the year. But first, we should take a look at the truck itself and see what makes it special.
A few years ago, Ford decided to make a big change to the already dominant F-Series. It wanted to introduce aluminum as the body material, a move that required them to gut their factories and lose tens of thousands of sales. The decision has been proven prescient, however, as aluminum has proven both tough and light, drastically increasing fuel economy of Ford trucks. Naturally, other truck makers are starting to follow suit.
Still, it took Ford a few years to streamline its new processes and manufacturing processes. In the interim, the F-Series wasn’t quite as polished and complete as it had been previously. But the F-150 is back to its best, firing on all cylinders. Ford is offering a host of impressive engines, of which EcoBoosts are the stars, that make the F-150 an efficient workhorse or a bullish joy depending on your mood. Ford is even releasing a brand-new diesel engine later in the model year which will be a first for the F-150.
The styling has been completely revamped, too. The two-bar grille is confident and modern, and serves as the centerpiece for a host of new exterior updates. Inside, the available cabins range from rugged and clean to preposterously luxurious. The 2018 F-150 has also received a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Association. But it’s not the only institution recognising the quality of Ford’s flagship.
To start with, Kelley Blue Book just named the Ford F-150 a Best Buy for the fourth consecutive year. Each year, Kelley Blue Book compiles a list of the vehicles that give the best value to consumers. They consider each vehicle’s comfort and driving performance, but also rely on hard data including five-year cost-to-own calculations. And according to KBB, the 2018 F-150 is a great bet for consumers.
“This year, Ford updated the styling, added a new base engine, expanded the availability of its excellent 10-speed automatic, and promises to add a turbodiesel to its lineup of engines later this model year. Combine these regular updates with the truck’s built-in goodness and it’s easy to see why the F-150 continues to prove it’s without equal.”
The editors’ effusive praise may seem hyperbolic, but KBB was not alone in its admiration for the F-Series.
In Car and Driver’s official review, the publication names the 2018 F-150 the best truck available: “From top to bottom, the iconic F-150 is the most complete and compelling full-size pickup to be found. Period.” Car and Driver gave it a five-star rating (obviously) and reserved particularly kind words for the new lineup of engines:
“The F-150 has an excellent selection of sophisticated engines, and most pair with Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission. Its strongest engine isn’t a red-blooded V-8 but a powerful twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 that is capable of towing a class-leading 13,200 pounds.” Given that towing is perhaps the most important criterion for truck buyers, it’s good to see Ford leading the pack. And to do it with a fuel-saving EcoBoost engine is even more impressive.
Later in the week (not late enough for Ford to clear room in the trophy case), the F-150 was named the 2018 Motor Trend Truck of the Year. Motor Trend had this to say about North America’s number one pickup: “In looking at the F-150 lineup, Ford kept its promise to lead the pack once it completed its transformation. Last year, Ford dominated our competition with the thunderous F-250 and F-350 Super Duty lineup. Now it’s Ford’s full-size light-duty pickups that grab the Calipers.”
I think all you need to know from the rest of Motor Trend’s review is that they called the 2018 F-150 “Simply Dominant.”
If the experts can be trusted, the 2018 F-150 is clearly the best pickup available. But the best way to find out if it’s the best pickup for you, is to come test it out. Capital Ford Lincoln has over 150 new 2018 Ford F-150s for you to choose from, so you might want to clear your afternoon.
